SEPTEMBER KEY POINTS

Livestock and meat production monthly trend movements for September 2017:
  • Cattle slaughter increased by 5,660 head (or 0.9%) in September 2017 when compared with August 2017 and there was a year-on-year increase of 70,110 head (or 12.4%).
  • The number of calves slaughtered in September 2017 increased by 2,740 head (or 7.3%) month-on-month and compared to this period last year decreased by 970 head (or 2.3%).
  • Sheep slaughter in September 2017 increased by 18,500 head (or 2.7%) compared with August 2017 and was up 186,400 head (or 36%) year-on-year.
  • Lamb slaughters increased by 17,600 head (or 0.9%) for September 2017. Compared with September 2016, slaughters increased by 96,700 head (or 5.2%).
  • Pig slaughter increased during the month, increasing by 1,800 head (or 0.4%) when compared to August 2017 and continued to increase year on year with slaughters up 23,240 head (or 5.5%) on this period last year.
